Looking for ideas

I want to show you what I'm doing some evenings in my spare time.
At first I want to say that this is ONLY A PRIVATE HOBBY PROJECT, I don't want to "kill" eCC, But eventually wake up Andreas a bit ;-)

Looking for ideas

Unread post by DerMicha75 » 25 Oct 2011, 20:08

Hi all,

I'm looking for ideas. My next step will be the inclusion of extras (manuals, advertisements, maps, links, FAQ's, ...). I see some solutions:

1. like ECC1, creating a directory (maybe with subdirs), you can place the files there

PRO:
- flexible
CON:
- Only documents, no links
- only available in Explorer, no possibilty to show in ECC2 which extras exists

2. Handling like images, means importing in ECC2, renaming when importing, hard folder/file structure

PRO:
- show all extras in user interface
- shareble (export my manuals, you can import them)
CON:
- Only documents, no links
- needs hard coded document types (like the image types) (if you have an other kind of document and there is no type for it... problem)
- only one document per type (not possible to add 2 different FAQ's, maps, ... to 1 game)

3. Database entires, import the documents but give them internal names (dok01, dok02, ...)

PRO:
- documents and links possible
- more than 1 documents of same kind for 1 game possible
CON:
- not really shareble (I have no idea yet)
- data creation not with "simple" import, you have to add each document separately (enter type and name, choose file, import)

So I'm not sure how to do this. Looking at other frontends was not really helpful, most of them ignore extras... Ideas really wanted!!!

Parts of 2 and 3, I'd say :yes_head:

I like the idea that these extras could be shared amongst users, and the easy importing like the images is a must!

Have you both heard of EmuXtras ? I have been a part of this project for awhile now, and though it is mainly focused on Xbox, the frontend makes use of extras.

Take a look at my MSX Xtras thread, there are a couple of videos that show a little of how it is setup. Don't know if this helps at all :-s

Edit:
Oh, you have to register to see that thread. Take a look at my youtube channel, there is an Amiga video also. (you are welcome to join emuxtras though :P )

While working on other new features I sometimes think of this problem... I think there will be fixed categories.

- Commercials (or "Advertisement", not sure about wording)
- Manuals (also reference cards, key mappings, ...)
- Maps
- Guides (walkthroughs, hints, ...)
- codes (level codes, or put these in guides?)
- Copy protection (code wheels, tables, ...)

What do you think? Any missing? Other names, more...?

Hi Micha,
nice you still work on ecc2 :yes_head:

I would put codes into guides (my opinion.....)

btw.
is it possible to put more then one *.jpg (or *.png , or whatever) in one Folder ? (in example for Advertisement)

and a little off-topic :
I still have a Bug in the last ecc2-version :
The Path in the Meta-Info-field is not correct.
I first had the roms in E:/ecc/user/vic20/roms/ecc-collection
know, i've deleted this Directory in option/platform settings.
Then i only add the path E:/Tosec/Vic20 to the plattform-settings.
Then i used "hide all roms" in vic20, to have an "empty" list (i have not delete the metadata)

But after parsing the roms from the new folder (e:tosec) , i still have the path E:/ecc/user/vic20/roms/ecc-collection in the meta-info-field. [-X
Think i've already posted you this problem.....any idea/solution ?

Just tested it... works. Here are the fixes in next release:

Code: Select all

fixed:

- some button resized wrong in image edit widged (when main window was too small)
- About dialog showed 0.4 instead of 0.5, now it shows 0.5.1 :-)
- when starting multiple parse jobs now they wait before excution for finishing the others
- added a "offset = 16" for parsing NES, so now the correct CRC is calculated, use this guide to update without loosing images/videos
  1. export images/videos
  2. delete images/videos directories
  3. reparse rom dirs
  4. import images/videos
- when reparsing roms there was no update on path, filename and packed name

thank you :thumb:
so, waiting for the next release ;)

btw.
what's about options like in ecc1 :
- checking double crc32
- list missing games (games that are in the database, but not on harddisk)
- open rom-folder (menue when right-click on the game-name in list)

do you plan to add this in ecc2 ?

I am really sorry for this, but sometimes the server PC is just off, dunno what's causing it, but be patient because when i notice it...i press the ON button again :yes_head:

Hi Vicman,

- checking double crc32

This should be impossible. When parsing I look into database if there is an entry with this CRC, and when it is there, this entry is updated.

- list missing games (games that are in the database, but not on harddisk)

I could do this, but currently not on my todo list, but its easy, maybe I put it on the list and do it :-)

- open rom-folder (menue when right-click on the game-name in list)

Never needed this, but also easy to implement, maybe... se above :-)

Micha

Edit: See my Todo list located on my desk... its full :-)

Some news here. Since my "download hdd" is full (lots of manuals, images, ...) I gave the extras a little more priority :yes_head:

So I decided this:

- fixed categories (Advertising, Manual, Map, Guide, Review)
- file based strucure like the images:

/user/extras/E9/E9B05565/a2600_E9B05565_manual_1.pdf will point to the first manual for the A2600 game Amidar

If you have multiple files for one type simply increase the counter. If you want to add an extra comment you can place it in brackes.

/user/extras/E9/E9B05565/a2600_E9B05565_manual_2(alternate).pdf will point to the 2nd manual for the A2600 game Amidar.

In ECC2 you can see a list with available extras (early version shown in picture). If an extra comment is available, it will show in list.
test_extras.PNG
So stay tuned, I'm working on it. (and yes, there will be an widget for easy importing/adding files)

See my posting with 0.6.1 beta version. It will look like this:

extras.PNG (26.72 KiB) Viewed 1709 times
On top you see the list widget (see last post), on bottom you see the edit widget (similar to image edit)
