Hi Tormentor667,

i assume you mention ECC datfiles (or MAME)?, a datfile contains all metadata and info of a rom (name, title, publisher, year, media etc.) that is stored in the ECC database, you can export this data and share it with other users who can import these again, you can find some dat files here: downloads.php?cat=1

or look here in user input: viewforum.php?f=31

Thanks a lot for the info, that helps actually a lot. So it is some interchange format to share rom data, so you don't have to look for them yourself yes?

How is ECC/ECC2 adding and comparing these? Only via filename?

Both versions work with CRC32 hashcode. This is calculated based on ROM-content. So if you have the same rom, you will get the same CRC. Other roms (maybe hacked, NES with headers, ...) give different CRC32 values.

Yup, that's exactly what it is!, you can create your own rom/platform collection, fill in all the data and export these to a "datfile" for backup or sharing!

Thanks a lot to both of you, this explains much. So, what datfiles are the best to use? I noticed that ECC2 also supports Hyperspin ones and Advanscene ones, but I am not sure where the difference is.

Hi,

these are external datfile formats. ECC brings its own format. ECC2 can read this too. But be warned: Not all metadata is stored into this file (for instance personal notes). So the best way to backup your data is to backup the database file. Datfiles are for easier exchanging information between users.
