vmware player - howto create a new vmx

Unread post by ECC » 10 Jul 2008, 18:38

"vmware player" is the free player for WMWARE Virtual Machines.

http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

The problem is, that you can only use already existing VM vmx files with this player, but you cant create them.

Solution:

Use the "vmx" creator at this website and create a basic vmx file. This can be loaded into VMWARE-Player!
So you can install the os you want! GREAT! :P

Aditional step...

Get the linux version of wmware workstation (tar.gz) from the vmware site (this is an 30 days trial) and extract the
/lib/isoimages/windows.iso
and change this lines in your vmx file:
de0:1.present = "TRUE"
ide0:1.fileName = "l:"
ide0:1.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

und änderst dies in

ide0:1.present = "TRUE"
ide0:1.fileName = "H:\windows.iso"
ide0:1.deviceType = "cdrom-image" .

Ok, done... now this also works :-)
Installing the SVGA Drivers

The Display Settings window has been opened to
help you finish installing your SVGA drivers.
To complete the installation, follow these steps:
1) Click the Advanced button.
2) Click the Adapter tab.
3) Click the Change button. This starts the Update
Device Driver Wizard. Click Next.
4) The Wizard now presents two options. Choose
the second option to "Display a list of all
the drivers in a specific location..."
Click Next.
5) Select "Have Disk..."
6) Enter the following path and click OK:
"C:\Programme\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\video\"
7) Select "VMware SVGA II" display adapter and click OK.
8) Answer Yes to the on-screen question, then click
Next to install the driver. After the driver is
installed, click Finish.
9) Click Close from the SVGA Properties dialog box,
then click Close from the Display Setting dialog
box.
10) Click Yes to restart Windows 98 and start using
the new video driver.

Have you created a vmx with http://www.easyvmx.com ?

Do you use vmware player?

Hit F2 on startup screen (dos black)

...

also activate preferences" "exit-behavior" "power of the virtual machine"

So, if you close the window, windows is shout down! Otherwise its only suspendet!
